How to Choose Your First Cozy Game

There are dozens of great cozy games on Steam. The hard part is knowing where to start. Here's a simple framework for finding the right first game for you.

Cozy games are a big tent. They range from meditative tile puzzles (Dorfromantik) to hundred-hour farm sims (Stardew Valley) to two-hour hiking adventures (A Short Hike) to narrative games about grief (Spiritfarer). They share a philosophy - low stakes, high warmth - but they're not all the same game.

Here's how to find the right starting point.

If you have 2-3 hours and want to be sure you like the genre

Play A Short Hike. It costs less than $8, it takes an afternoon, and it is a complete and lovely experience. If you finish it and want more, you'll know cozy games are for you. If you don't love it, you've risked very little.

If you want something you can put hundreds of hours into

Play Stardew Valley. It's $13.99 and has consumed more hours from more players than almost any other game on Steam. You'll get your money's worth many times over. It's also the reference point for the entire genre - playing it first gives you a baseline to compare everything else against.

If you love puzzles

Start with Dorfromantik or Unpacking. Dorfromantik is pure, meditative tile-laying. Unpacking is spatial puzzles wrapped in emotional storytelling. Both are exceptional.

If you want something with more story

Spiritfarer or Beacon Pines. Spiritfarer is long, emotional, and beautiful. Beacon Pines is shorter, darker, and narratively inventive. Both are among the best stories in recent indie gaming.

If you're not sure

Pick A Short Hike. It's the right answer in almost every case.

The only wrong move is analysis paralysis. Every game on this site is worth playing. Pick one and start. The cozy game community is welcoming, the games are forgiving, and there's no such thing as a bad choice here.
